That one sentence sums up for me what education is really about.
My own path within education was anything but self-evident. I have experienced what it is like to drop out and not be seen and heard. Due to physical and psychological complaints, I dropped out of school. I have experienced many difficult sides of the education system, but in the end I have also been able to discover its strength and its beautiful sides. It was precisely these experiences that led me to work in education myself.
From the beginning I have been involved in Adviesraad ÉigenWijsheid, because I want to use my experiences to improve education. I have experienced how great the need can be to be able to learn and develop, especially when that is not a given.
I believe in a school environment in which every student, regardless of the need for support, feels safe and is given the space to grow from their own talents. Not only towards a diploma, but also towards independence and active citizenship.
I stand for education in which sincere attention and trust in the student are central. Sometimes that calls for creativity, sometimes for patience and sometimes just for someone to stand next to you and say: “I see you.”
Within Adviesraad ÉigenWijsheid I am concerned with inclusive education, the student perspective and school attendance.
